Bozeman man rescued after skiing accident

Custer County Search and Rescue volunteers rescued an injured skier from the base of Horstmann Peak west of Redfish Lake Sunday night. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Ben Vandenbos, 29, contacted friends, who then alerted authorities. Vandenbos said he fell while skiing and suffered injuries to his face and head. He lost conciousness and awoke 2 to 3 hours later and realized he had also injured his right leg and knee. Sheriff Stuart Lumpkin activated the Stanley Search and Rescue unit. 2 Bear Air from Kalispell dispatched a helicopter to help in the operation. Incident Commander Deputy Brandyn Knight said the aircraft is equipped to operate at high altitudes, in the dark, and deploys a rescue hoisting system to extract patients from difficult terrain. The helicopter arrived on the scene at 12:38 a.m. Monday and transported Vandenbros to St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center in Ketchum.
