Idaho Falls woman killed in I-15 rollover crash near Fort Hall
UPDATE 1:38 a.m.: Idaho State Police say a 61-year-old woman was killed in a rollover crash around 8:00 Saturday evening near Fort Hall.
According to a news release, Ramon Ponce, 66, of Idaho Falls, was traveling south in a Ford F150 when he tried to overtake a semi driving by David Dunn, 43, of Utah as they entered a construction zone.
Idaho State Police said as Ponce attempted to pull in front of the semi, the front driver’s side of the semi made contact with the read of Ponce’s truck causing it to roll. A passenger in the truck, Josefina Yanez Ponce, 61, of Idaho Falls was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. Ramon was taken by air ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center. Neither victim was wearing a seatbelt.
Dunn was not taken to the hospital.
I-15 was completely shut down for roughly 90 minutes and partially blocked for four hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
UPDATE 11:32 p.m.: Idaho State Police have reopened all lanes of southbound traffic near milepost 83 on I-15 after a fatal crash.
According to witnesses, a vehicle was clipped by a semi, causing the vehicle to roll around 8:00 p.m. Saturday. The southbound lanes of traffic were shut down for roughly 90 minutes.
Life flight was called in, but was not needed. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi appeared to be okay. Witnesses say he was seen standing outside of his truck.
ISP had not released an official cause of the crash or names of those involved.
