Crosswalk changes could be coming to some Sunnyside Road intersections

People living in the Stonebrook Subdivision could soon see changes to crosswalks along Sunnyside Road after the city of Idaho Falls conducted a study of pedestrian traffic in the area.

Parents in the area went to the city concerned about students crossing Sunnyside Road from Nathan Drive and Stonebrook Lane. Currently, the intersections are controlled by a “walk – don’t walk signs.” During the school year, there are crossing guards at a few of the intersections but parents want more.

“We do have a lot of school children walking to school,” Idaho Falls City Engineer Kent Fugal said.

The city conducted a study on pedestrian traffic and said it was surprised by how busy the intersections are.

“We have locations on both Stonebrook and Nathan where we were actually surprised by numbers we did get. They were higher than what we counted in the past,” Fugal said. “We did get some counts that are higher than we expected so that does mean something different needs to happen.”

The city said those changes could include adding more crossing guards, repainting crosswalks or even adding more pedestrian crossing warning signs.

The Idaho Falls’ Traffic Safety Committee will meet Tuesday to discuss the changes. Members of the Stonebrook Homeowners Association will also be in attendance. The meeting will take place at 3 p.m. at the Idaho Falls Police Department Training Annex on Park Avenue in downtown.
