Resident concerned about constant speeding creates “Please SLOW DOWN” sign

Speeding in residential areas is a constant concern. Even with a posted speed limit, drivers can still race through the neighborhood.

“Twenty-five miles an hour is supposed to be the speed limit, and we have kids with bikes going by and going to school. Early in the morning, just before dawn, you see them going by at 60 or 70 mph. And I see some fast ones going by,” Howard Larson, a concerned neighbor, said.

“Kids that live two houses down just said, “Yeah, even when we were shoveling snow we almost got hit by a car,” Tina Luhman, who made signs asking drivers to slow down, said.

The speeding has St. Clair Road and Cluster Street neighbors on edge. That’s why Luhman created the signs.

“About a month ago, this neighbor’s dog, the neighbor right behind me, Loki, was killed and I had to pick it up. And that just broke my heart because I’ve already picked up 10 neighbors’ cats. Had to go to the neighbors, ‘Here’s your cat. It died,'” Luhman said.

The purpose of the white and purple signs is to ease the pain and worry that speeding has caused this neighborhood. Other residents have rallied behind Luhman.

“Bruce and Row, so do Howard and Theresa, Melissa and Rich,” Luhman said, listing some of those who support her.

The signs have been up for a month and have already been stolen and vandalized. But the neighborhood is hoping for changes, such as more traffic cops and stop signs.

“And a three-way stop there, because that will enable everybody to slow down or dissuade them from taking St. Clair — the short cut — instead of taking Woodruff,” Luhman said.

“It drives poor Tina wild, and I’m not particularly happy about it. I do think they ought to buy an electronic speed control in the city,” Larson said.

The neighbors have alerted the city and the Idaho Falls Police Department of the speeding. Luhman is trying to rally neighbors and find solutions that can be put into action.
