Pocatello fire stations and vehicles become safe havens for infants
The Pocatello Fire Department is now a Safe Haven for infants.
Recently, firefighters installed signage at the department’s four fire stations and on command staff vehicles that declare the building and equipment as Safe Havens.
According to Idaho law, Safe Havens are safe places where parents who cannot provide care can relinquish an infant up to 30 days old, anonymously, and without fear of prosecution.
“We’ve all heard the stories of babies being left in what would be described as less than safe circumstances and sadly, which can result in the child’s death,” said Kim Stouse, Community Relations/Education Specialist. “We want new parents to know that if they feel they cannot permanently care for the infant for whatever reason, we will take them no questions asked.”
