Local school remembers 9/11, honors local servicemen
Children, veterans, police officers and other servicemen and women came together to honor the victims of 9/11.
Students raised a flag to half staff and then led a prayer for those affected. The school said they wanted to honor those who protect our every day lives.
“I think it’s important to remember the sacrifice that people make for us,” Carina VanPelt, principal of Holy Rosary Catholic School, said. “And I think it’s important to acknowledge those people and say thank you to them whenever we have the opportunity to do so.”
Students and service members then got together for lunch, giving students a chance to meet these heroes up close. None of these kids were alive 16 years ago. The school feels it’s important to teach them about the events of 9/11 and honor those who serve.
“The question was, ‘Will you keep doing this when they don’t know about 9/11?'” Van Pelt said. “And the answer is we’re not doing it only because of what happened on 9/11, but also because of all the other times day in and day out that people have risked their lives to provide our safety and security for this country.”
Veterans also think it’s important to educate the younger generation.
“I think it’s good that shows the young children some of the people that werved to help keep them free,” Edward Golie, retired Navy veteran, said.
This is the 5th year the school has held the ceremony and lunch.
