Idaho Falls Power brightens up downtown

Idaho Falls Power hopes to shine a light on its downtown by installing new decorative LED lighting, this spring.

IDP will replace the 40-foot-tall black mast arm streetlights with 12-foot tall decorative light poles. The new poles will be fitted with LED fixtures that are more efficient, but still provide the same amount of light. It will also direct light primarily onto the sidewalks and roads in an effort to minimize light pollution upward.

“The city of Idaho Falls has been working on restoring the historic downtown for awhile,” said Tony Allen, an energy specialist for IFP. “Idaho Falls Power is trying to convert all of our street lighting into LED’s and were slowly doing that in phases as it makes sense.”

IFP is investing $252,000 budgeted dollars into the project.

The project will start April 9, hopes it will take only about a month to complete.

During the installation, there will be some disruption in the available downtown parking. Crews are planning to complete a street block of lights each day. There will be no parking within the work area. Motorist can drive through the work zones, but are encouraged to watch for workers and equipment.
