Mentors and participants react to Big Brothers Big Sisters program ending

After 29 years of mentoring kids in the community, the Big Brothers Big Sisters of southeast Idaho is closing it’s doors.

“It really helps a lot of kids. It makes the difference in the lives of everyone that is involved in the program not just the children. We do believe that there are more children in idaho falls who could have benefited from this program so it’s an emotional time for all of us,” says Olivia Lovejoy, Case Manager.

It’s touched the lives of volunteers.

“It’s wonderful for them to develop a great relationship with this child that they’re making the difference in their life,” says Lovejoy.

One big brother says he’s loved being a part of the program and mentoring his little brother.

“One of the coolest things about being a big brother is that you can expose them to new things they would have never experienced and then seeing them get excited about it is kind of fun. So I think the best part about Big Brothers Big Sisters for me is showing them hobbies and building a bond that way,” says Taylor Rasmussen, volunteer.

And they say it’s made the difference for the kids involved.

“It has been wonderful for all of these kids. I’ve seen a true change in their lives, their behavior and their outlook on life,” says Lovejoy.

One past member has kept in touch with her big sister after she aged out of the program four years ago.

“I still see Shilo every week. I make a lot of time to spend time with her. She’s been a big influence in my life and always has been. I don’t think I could make it without her,” says Stevie Rall, who graduated the program after turning 18.

She says the program greatly impacted her childhood.

“I grew up in a low income home, a single parent home. I would have never gotten the courage to do better and not fall into the same paths,” says Rall.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is encouraging volunteers to keep in touch even though the program is closing.
