Birch Creek campground suffers flood damage

The Birch Creek Campground is still open, but the Bureau of Land Management in Idaho Falls says last week’s high waters flooded the area.

Fast moving water washed out many roads and left eroded gaps up to three and a half feet deep.

The Upper Snake Field Office Outdoor Recreation Planner Jason Byrd said some areas, especially those along the creek, washed out so badly that they are impassable event to ATV’s.

“The site has changed dramatically and it’s important for the public to take that into consideration when making their camping plans,” said Byrd. “We understand how much folks appreciate the access the Birch Creek campground provides for fishing. We are going to address this damage as quickly as we can.”

Visitors to the campground are advised that large portions of roads may be missing. They are advised to stay on designated routes and remember that off-road driving is still prohibited.
Some Birch Creek campsites will not be accessible until flood danger is over and the Bureau can make repairs.

Heavy rains predicted this weekend could make problems worse.

“We are trying to put together a plan to repair the campground, but some of the damage is so severe we don’t have a timeline for when we can get everything fixed,” said Byrd.
