Bingham County Tornado ranked EF-0

On Saturday, the National Weather Service in Pocatello issued a Tornado Warning for portions of Bingham, Butte and Bonneville Counties. Based off of the rotation seen on Doppler radar, a Tornado warning was issued just after 6 p.m. A Second Tornado Warning was issued as the storm advanced Northeast towards Idaho Falls.

Shortly after the tornado warning was issued, the National Weather Service received reports of a funnel cloud northwest of Moreland. The storm continued into the Idaho Falls area, around 7 p.m. As the storm core moved over the lava beds and entered into Bonneville county, the rotation signature on radar weakened. The National Weather Service then issued a Severe Thunderstorm warning for the Idaho Falls and Ammon area, with the threat of hail, lightning and strong downdraft winds.

After reviewing social media reports and video from the public, the Weather Service has determined a tornado did touchdown near the Taber area of Bingham county around 6:30 p.m.

“Tumbleweeds and tree limbs lofted briefly in the area of 1400 w and us 26. Based on this report, tornado will be rated a low end EF-0. Time estimated by radar,” the Weather Service said in their report.

An EF-0 is the lowest rank on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. An EF-0 sees wind gusts around 65 to 85 mph.
