Mountain lion removed from ISU campus

A mountain lion was safely removed from Idaho State University’s Pocatello campus Friday around 10:30 a.m.

The mountain lion was reported in a tree along the Red Hill Trail behind Mountain View Cemetery.

Idaho State University Public Safety established a perimeter for the safety of the campus while the Pocatello Police Department and Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) personnel responded to the scene.

IDFG tranquilized the mountain lion. It was then captured unharmed and removed from the area to be later released in accordance with state protocol.

If you encounter a mountain lion, IDFG recommends the following tips:

Do not run. If you are with children, pick them up without bending over. Do not turn your back on the lion, crouch down or try to hide. Remain facing the lion and slowly back away. Leave the animal an escape route. Try to appear as large as possible–stand on a rock or stump, hold up your arms, stand next to others. Shout, wave your arms and throw objects if the lion does not leave the area. Fight back if a mountain lion attacks. Stay on your feet and use sticks, rocks, backpack, hands to fight back. Use bear spray if you have it. Never approach a mountain lion or offer it food.
