Local issues settled at the polls

A number of local issues were settled across eastern Idaho Tuesday.

POWER COUNTY…Rockland School Levy

In Power County, the Rockland School District was seeking a $210,000, two-year supplemental levy. The measure required a two-thirds, super-majority for approval. The issue was approved by an 83 percent margin, 103 to 21.

CUSTER COUNTY JAIL

In Custer County, a jail improvement project was defeated. The final vote was 734 against to 681 in favor.

Voters previously rejected a $5.5 million general obligation jail bond issue in November.

TETON COUNTY ROAD AND BRIDGE LEVY VICTOR SALES TAX

Two tax issues were on the ballot in Teton County, Idaho Tuesday and both were approved.

The first would authorize the county to assess an override levy of one million dollars per year to improve the county’s road and bridge infrastructure. It required a simple majority for approval. 69 percent of voters approved.

The second proposal was on the ballot in Victor, where the city council was proposing adoption of a new sales tax. The measure would create a 3 percent room tax on all short-term rental properties, including hotels, motels, condos, tourist homes, vacation rentals or other sleeping accommodations. It would also establish a 1 percent sales tax on retail liquor by the drink, including beer, wine and other alcoholic beverage. And a 1 percent tax on all retail sales allowed by state law. The funding would be used for capital projects. The measure required a 60 percent majority to win approval. 71 percent of Victor voters approved the measure.

Sugar-Salem & Fremont School District boundary

Voters in parts of Madison and Fremont Counties voted Tuesday on whether or not to adjust the district’s boundaries. Patrons were seeking to move a segment of the district from the Fremont school district into the Sugar Salem School district. A simple majority was required. The proposal was defeated by a vote of 29 to 17. There were about 120 families affected overall.
