Madison School District breaks major ground
Madison High School is celebrating some major construction. The school held a groundbreaking Wednesday that will expand in both education and athletics.
That major expansion includes a gymnasium, football stadium and sports complex.
“We’ve been in the building at the high school now eight years,” said Randy Lords, the assistant superintendent of Madison County School District. “All of our athletic events are taking place at the junior high, and our junior high kids are ready for us to come back here.”
The continuously growing student population also brought on the need for ten additional classrooms.
“We just need the room,” said Kevin Howell, chairman of the school board, “even though the high school is only around ten years old. We’re pushing it already.”
The classrooms will be added to the science wing with two science labs, which the school hopes will increase its educational success.
The buildings will “Increase our science program, bringing in robotics, bringing in different types of electronics, different STEM activities.” Lords said.
The $26.9 million bond that made all of this possible, was passed last August by an outstanding 81 percent of voters. Board members believe that the continual huge community support will help continue to make the school and the district prosper.
“We have an excellent student body. I mean everything they participate in, whether it’s sports, academics, FFA,” Howell said. “They just excel.”
While they think about the current additions, they future plans in the back of their minds because of the growth in the community.
“It’s challenging, but it’s a good challenge to have,” Howell said.
The school district will be updating the public of the progress during the construction with pictures on their website.
