Here’s how we’re celebrating National Donut Day
National Donut Day started back in 1938 to honor the legendary Salvation Army’s donut service, making the tasty treats for soldiers fighting on the front lines back in World War I.
The Salvation Army’s group of women volunteered were also known as ‘Lassies’, who found a way to get the troops some donuts by filling either trash cans or helmets with lard, which would then be used as a fryer.
But by the time the Great Depression hit, the Lassie’s notable donuts were called back into play, and that’s when National Donut Day was immortalized, falling on the first Friday in June each year as a delicious way to help raise money for the needy.
