Why Diamond Flat Fire is still burning
The Diamond Flat Fire in Soda Springs is still burning. The fire started July 18th because of a lightning strike.
They’ve decided to let the fire burn out. Right now it is smoldering and not moving too far. When firefighters responded it was at three acres and hasn’t moved much since.
They choose to let naturally caused wildfires burn out for several reasons. It depends on how fast the fire is moving and if it will benefit natural resources.
“Doesn’t pose any threats to any structures and it has more benefits to the local area, to the wildlife and the regeneration of the area,” says Kathleen Gorby, Public Affairs, Caribou Targhee National Forest.
Gorby says they will let the fire smolder until the first frost and let mother nature put the fire out.
