Stage 1 Fire restrictions ordered
The Salmon-Challis National Forest will enforce Stage One fire restrictions beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, August 11.
Fire danger across the region is “extreme” and range and forest land at all elevations is dry.
The affected area includes all forest service lands within the Forest, but outside the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the Bureau of Land Management Salmon and Challis field offices, and state and private lands within the Central Idaho dispatch zone.
Stage 1 restrictions primarily apply to campfires and smoking. The rules prohibit igniting, building, maintaining, attending or using a fire outside a provided fire structure. They also prohibit smoking outside an enclosed vehicle or building.
Exceptions to the rule include persons using a stove or grill fueled solely by liquid petroleum, metal fire pans within a quarter-mile of the south side of the Main Salmon River, persons smoking while stopped in an area at least 3 feet in diameter that has been cleared of all flammable materials, firefighters performing official duty, or people who have a specific written permit.
The restrictions will remain in effect until there is a significant change in fire danger.
