UPDATE: Artesian fire grows to 1,900 acres

UPDATE 8/18/18 8:10 p.m.

The Artesian fire burning west of the Menan Buttes has grown to 1,900 acres.

Fire crews say current fire lines are holding and crews will continue to work on containing the fire and hope to have 100% containment sometime on Sunday.

Additional resources have been requested for structure protection.

No evacuations have been ordered, but if they are needed they will be handled by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

UPDATE 8/18/18 3:50 p.m.: The fire has grown to an estimated 1,000 acres.

Ucon and Madison Fire are also assisting with the fire.

ORIGINAL: A fire is growing rapidly west of the Menan Buttes south of Highway 33 and east of Sage Junction.

The Artesian Fire started around 11 a.m. Saturday morning. It is currently estimated at 200 acres. BLM expect containment by Saturday evening.

The fire was caused by lightening.

Dozers are starting to line the fire. Air resources are backing up firefighters on the ground.

Central Fire District, Roberts Fire District, Hamer Fire, BLM, and US Forest Service are helping respond to the fire.

No structures are currently threatened and there are no closures. However, residents are asked to avoid travel on Highway 33.
