Brady Chapel holds third annual scavenger hunt

Several people in Pocatello went on a scavenger hunt through Mountain View Cemetery Friday night as part of the third annual scavenger hunt.

Searchers took a map, located the headstones and answered questions about it then snapped a picture. Those who find them all got a coupon for a free ice cream cone at Tastee Treat. They also get entered into a drawing to win gift certificates from Tastee Treat.

The scavenger hunt was free to do, but the goal was to bring in as many donations as possible.

The hunt was a fundraiser for the Brady Chapel, which was built in 1922.

The goal is to raise $2,000 to restore the chapel’s pinnacles.

Terri Neu, assistant planner for the city of Pocatello and liason for the Historic Preservation Commission, said events like this are a great way to help the community interact with a piece of history.

Neu said many people tell her they’ve lived in Pocatello most or all of their lives and have never seen inside of Brady Chapel so these events are a fun way to bring people out.

“We like the fact that it’s getting people out here,” she said. “This is a beautiful cemetery, it’s a beautiful building, and people should be out here and see what’s out here. So many of the people that are buried here, especially in the older section, no longer have family, or at least family in the area. So this is a chance for us to kind of memorialize these people and so it’s kind of fun.”

Saturday, Oct. 13 is the “Stones and Stories” event, where actors will be telling the story of some of the unique histories of people buried there. The event is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and are tickets are $10 each or $25 for a family of four.

All money goes toward Brady Chapel.
