Cell phones now banned while driving in Idaho Falls

Drivers in Idaho Falls must now put down the cell phone.

The Idaho Falls City Council unanimously approved a city ordinance banning the use of mobile electronic devices while driving. There is an exception for law enforcement and other first responders. If you do get caught talking on your cell phone, you will get a violation. Three violations in a two-year period will result in a misdemeanor charge. City council members say this is all about the safety of the public.

“The thing is I would choose the safety of our citizens over the convenience,” said Jim Freeman, Idaho Falls City Council member. “This is going to be inconvenient for me also. I really have to watch myself not to notice my phone when it starts making it noise. I find it easier now just to turn it off when I’m in the car, I hope everybody else does too.”

You can still use your phone if it is in hands-free mode or if it is an emergency situation.
