Officer awarded Jackson Medal of Commendation
In January 2017, Jackson Police Officer Phillip Smith was called to assist in a medical emergency. The call resulted in the death of the person to a heroin overdose.
As a result of the incident, Officer Smith led an extensive, ten-month investigation. He gathered enough evidence to identify the suspect who delivered the controlled substance to the victim. The Wyoming Department of Investigations used the evidence to issue a warrant for negligent homicide.
Wednesday, Jackson Police Chief Todd Smith and Mayor Pete Muldoon presented Smith with the town’s Medal of Merit Commendation, one of the highest commendations the town bestows.
In a proclamation, Muldoon said, “Officer Smith continues to present a resolve and devotion to his duties as a Jackson Police Officer including taking lead roles in major investigations encompassing our town, county, and neighboring states; and…on behalf of the Jackson Town Council, the Jackson Police Department, the Town of Jackson organization, and the entire community do hereby acknowledge and commend Officer Phillip Smith for his significant contributions in keeping our community safe.”
Muldoon called Smith an exceptional example of law enforcement servant leadership who was dedicated to protect the health, safety, welfare, and quality of life for all residents and guests of the community.
