Man dies in avalanche while snowmobiling in Bonneville County
UPDATE 1/26/18 6:23 P.M.: Family members have identified the man who died Friday after an avalanche in eastern Idaho near the Wyoming border.
A sister says Tommy Hawkins, of Layton, Utah, was killed as he was riding snowmobiles with three other adults in the Cabin Creek area on Fog Mountain near Victor, Idaho.
Angela Spencer says Hawkins was a former resident of Victor and a Teton High School graduate, the East Idaho News reports.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office says the risk of avalanche is high right now, and back country travelers and recreationists should use extreme caution.
ORIGINAL STORY: A snowmobiler died in an avalanche near Cabin Creek on Friday night.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said that emergency search and rescue crews from Bonneville and Teton counties responded to the Cabin Creek area on the Victor side of Fog Mountain in Bonneville County because of a report of an avalanche.
Three people were snowmobiling in the area where the avalanche happened. A man was overcome by the slide and could not get out. The other two riders went to call for help.
The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said that it is working on recovering the body on Saturday.
