Scammers targeting online sports merchandise buyers
Online offers on team merchandise that look too good to be true, probably are.
The Better Business Bureau says scammers are using websites and discounts to lure shoppers and get them to pay, and then failing to ship the item ordered. This is happening a lot with the Super Bowl coming up and NBA season going on. Other red flags include offers on fast shipping, issues contacting the company and, if the seller does contact you back, the emails are in poor English. If it is a new company you are buying through, look for any details that might show it is a scam.
“If you’re getting emails and they’re having you go to a website that may look like an official website of NFL.com or things like that, just be a little wary to look if there’s any things that look a little odd, a lot of times these things can go to scam websites,” said Jeremy Johnson, marketplace manager for the Better Business Bureau. “So before you’re putting in your personal information or financial information, you want to make sure that where you’re at online is legitimate. “
The BBB says to research companies you haven’t heard of before. Never wire money or use a prepaid debit card as payment.
