Burglary count spikes during the spring
Law enforcement is warning spring breakers to be alert and lock up your valuables. Scott Killian, Idaho Falls Lieutenant said, “When the weather warms up we get a lot of foot traffic at night of people wondering around. We see more burglaries, vehicle burglaries, and residential burglaries. this time of year.” Springtime is the time of year when burglaries start to spike and this has community members concerned. Idaho Falls community member Jadyn Daniels said, “I was not aware of this but it does concern me. I don’t feel safe if there are burglars. I think if I pay for my things then I think I should be able to keep those things” A lot of people and would like to hang on to there belonging and there is a way to keep your items safe. Killian said, “The main thing is to lock your things up. Put things away. We receive a lot of theft from bicycles, lawn mowers things that are left out. Cars should be locked both day and night and whenever they are home.” An increase in burglaries has already shown in some areas of eastern Idaho. Rexburg was unable to provide a count for burglary numbers but did say they have had an increase in calls for missing bikes during the beginning of the month. Rigby has remained steady with only three reports of burglaries. While Idaho Falls and Blackfoot have experienced the spike with a dozen and more reports of burglaries. Killian said, “As far as houses go, motion lights are wonderful when people are up to no good. Security cameras are becoming inexpensive right now and they a wonderful tool for us to help solve a crime. If you notice lately we have had a lot of great video footage of suspects and it makes our job easier.” The police department says with the help of these tools, occasionally they are able to get the stolen property back from burglars. If the items have not yet been sold or traded for drugs. Ultimately they believe this is more of an indication that the person is caught and brought to justice.
