3 candidates in the running to be next Pocatello Police Chief

Pocatello Police Chief Scott Marchand recently announced June 17 would be his last day, retiring after more than 30 years of service in the Gate City.

Since he made the announcement, the city has been on a nationwide search to find his replacement.

Now, just three candidates remain. Jim Peterson, Major Roger Schei and U.S. Marshal Brian Underwood have all spent time working in the department and have risen up through the ranks of law enforcement.

Jim Peterson, who was hired as a patrol officer in 1985, served as the deputy chief of the department from 2012 until his retirement in June 2018.

Major Roger Schei has worked for the Pocatello Police Department for 25 years and took over as deputy chief when Jim Peterson retired.

U.S. Marshal Brian Underwood began his law enforcement career with the Pocatello Police Department, where he worked form 1988-92. Underwood was a member of the Pocatello City Council and warden of the women’s prison before moving to Boise nine years ago.

Since April 2010, Underwood has been the U.S. Marshal for the District of Idaho. Now he’s looking to make his way back to Pocatello.

“Most of the law enforcement officers I started with, back in 1988, have all retired,” Underwood said. “I’m 53-years-old, I’m just not ready to be done. I think I’m at the prime of my opportunity to give back to the community.”

Underwood has worked with, or alongside, both of the other candidates during his 30-year career.

In his opinion, his perspective and leadership experience separates him from the rest.

“You don’t ever want to say well I’m better than the other guy because these are great guys. I just think we’re different in that I’ve had experience outside, leadership experience, outside of the city police department,” Underwood explained.

Next Monday, May 6, the public is invited to meet all three candidates at Pocatello City Hall. There, people will be able to ask each of them questions and get a better understanding as to why each one feels they are the best for the job.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
