Salmon-Challis reports first lightning fire of the year

The Salmon-Challis National Forest reported the region’s first lightning caused fire of the season.

The “Next Gen” fire was reported last Thursday, May 30, was discovered about 8:20 a.m. It was estimated at a tenth of an acre and burning in a single Douglas fir tree.

The fire was located about 8.5 miles southwest of Salmon in South Fork Williams Creek.

Four firefighters spent one day staffing the fire. They called it “out” at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
