Kirkham Building comes down
The Oscar A. Kirkham Building was demolished Tuesday.According to the Brigham Young University Idaho website, the building was not seismically stable, and bringing the building up to current building code standards would have been cost-prohibitive.
The Kirkham auditorium has hosted many famous speakers, including the former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who visited on March 2, 1959.
Full demolition is expected to last through the beginning of September.
Plans for what will go in place of the building is a new “Welcome to BYU-Idaho” sign and a new parking lot.
