DNA evidence leads Rexburg police to alleged Subway restaurant burglar

REXBURG, Idaho (KIFI) - A Rexburg man is now in custody after DNA evidence linked him to a burglary at a local fast-food restaurant late last month. The name of the man has not been released at this time.
"We are grateful to everyone that assisted our outstanding detectives over the course of this investigation," the Rexburg police department wrote on their Facebook page.
Surveillance video showed that a lone suspect broke into the Subway along 2nd East in Rexburg through a window, according to a post to the Rexburg police department's Facebook page. Through the surveillance footage and employee interviews, police say they were able to identify a former employee as a suspect.
Police say the man stole a significant amount of cash.
Detectives were able to locate blood at the scene, which was from a cut on the suspect's finger. The blood was sent to a state laboratory for testing.
Police obtained a warrant for the suspect's DNA for comparison, this DNA was then sent to the lab where it was matched with the blood from the scene, according to the initial Facebook post.
Detectives also found psilocybin mushrooms on the unnamed suspect's person at the time of the arrest.
The alleged burglar was arrested and booked into the Madison County jail on felony charges including burglary, grand theft, and malicious injury to property, on 1/29/2025.
