SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Conservative Utah lawmakers have overturned mask mandates in two counties as the omicron variant of the coronavirus fuels a punishing surge. The GOP-dominated Utah House passed the resolution on Friday. It went into effect immediately because it was approved by the Senate on the first day that lawmakers began meeting for the year. The measure does not require a signature or veto from Republican Gov. Spencer Cox. Lawmakers railed against using mask mandates against the highly contagious variant. Backers of the mandate said they were disappointed the Legislature undid a step that had been taken to protect residents.
