University of Wyoming plans virtual graduation amid COVID-19

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The University of Wyoming has canceled traditional graduation and will instead hold virtual commencement ceremonies because of the coronavirus.

University officials said in a statement Friday they plan to broadcast the virtual ceremony live on May 16, the same date traditional graduation was planned.

The university has no choice but to look for alternatives to public gatherings on campus in Laramie, acting President Neil Theobald said.

Other options for graduates include taking part in ceremonies next winter or spring.

Wyoming is the only state without any known deaths from the COVID-19 virus. The state had at least 162 cases confirmed in 16 of its 23 counties as of Friday.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause more severe illness and death.

To limit spread of the virus, Gov. Mark Gordon has ordered schools and businesses ranging from nail salons to bars and movie theaters closed through April 17.

Other businesses including most stores remain open. Gordon has urged Wyoming residents to stay at home except for essential activity.

Gordon has not issued a mandatory stay at home order for Wyoming like those in effect for Colorado, Idaho and Montana.
