How to stay safe while driving in snowy conditions

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - The snow is finally here, which means back to driving in wintry conditions.

"The roads are going to be slicker now," said Jason Miller of the Idaho Falls Police Department.

In 2018, Idaho ranked number four in the country for most dangerous driving conditions, and it doesn't look like these Idaho winters are slowing down anytime soon.

Miller said a big issue is that people tend to drive the same speeds as they do in the summer and don't increase their distance behind the vehicle in front of them, which causes problems.

"That vehicle stops and they're not able to stop," Miller said.

The police department is reminding drivers to slow down, increase the distance between vehicles and get rid of distractions — including putting away your phone.

"The main thing is to just pay attention," Miller said.

The police department also said it's important to have a blanket in your car to stay warm in case you get stranded.

"If you do get stranded and stuff like that it’s always best to stay in your car that’s where we’re going to be coming to is finding that car," Miller said.

So, remember while you're out on the roads this winter, to slow down and stay safe.
