Public gets to give input on preserving historic buildings

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (KIFI) - Officials from the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) are holding open house meetings in eastern Idaho. These meetings are meant to collect feedback as SHPO tries to make updates to its State Historic Preservation Plan.

People are encouraged to give their input on what kind of changes should be made to the State Historic Preservation Plan. This will affect not just eastern Idaho but the entire Gem State.

The plan was last updated eight years ago, so it is due for an update as technology and Idaho itself continue to develop.

“In the eight years that have passed, our state's population has grown by over 250,000 people. So we're we're a different state,” SHPO Outreach Historian Dan Everhart said. “There's a reason why these plans sort of go stale after a while. We need to keep them updated and...that population growth is just an indicator of why we would do something like that.”

The last two open houses are at these dates and locations:

  • Date: Wednesday, April 3, 2024, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
    • Location: Pocatello City Hall, City Council Chambers
    • 911 N. 7th Avenue
    • Pocatello, ID 83205
  • Date: Thursday, April 4, 2024, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    • Location: Idaho Falls Library
    • 457 West Broadway
    • Idaho Falls, ID 83402

If people are not able to visit the open houses, a web-based public survey is available here.
