Smoldering snag located in 2022 Moose Fire footprint
SALMON, Idaho (KIFI) - A smoldering snag was recently located within the footprint of the 2022 Moose Fire.
This tree has been burning since last summer enduring winter weather to continue burning and is far interior of the fire perimeter. Officials say it has very low risk of spreading, so the tree will be allowed to continue burning until it self-extinguishes.
There is a high likelihood that more trees in this same circumstance will be located this summer. Each newly reported burning tree will be individually assessed for the appropriate response.
The snag, known as the Virginia Fire, is located approximately 13 miles west of North Fork.
To date, there has been two wildfires reported on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
Nationally, there are seven uncontained large fires being managed under a full suppression strategy and five large fires managed under a strategy other than full suppression.
