ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says the leader of the Islamic State group was killed during an operation by Turkish forces in Syria. Erdogan told TRT Turk television late on Sunday that the IS leader known as Abu Hussein al-Qurayshi was killed ion Saturday following a lengthy pursuit by the Turkish intelligence agency. He didn’t provide further details or say where the operation occurred. IS didn’t immediately confirm the death. Al-Qurayshi was IS leader after the group’s previous chief was killed in October. IS has long lost the territory it once held in Iraq and Syria but has been been trying to rise again, with sleeper cells carrying out deadly attacks in both countries.
