A rare blue supermoon could be playing a role in worsening the impact of Hurricane Idalia as the storm lashes Florida’s west coast. A supermoon that can increase normal tides was also forecast just as Idalia made landfall as a high-end Category 3 hurricane. It came ashore near Keaton Beach in a sparsely populated region of Florida. A supermoon is the closest full moon to Earth. That makes it appear larger and provides a spectacular backdrop in photos around the world. Experts say it’s expected to make tidal flooding worse not only in Florida, but in states such as Georgia and South Carolina.
