New garage in Pocatello allows you to work on car
POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) - Barry Marshall served in the Army from 2000 to 2007, and during his time of service, he had a luxury that gave him an idea.
"While I was on bases here in the states, we always had an auto shop where you could go in, rent everything and work on your own vehicle," Marshall said. "I've done a lot of do-it-yourself fixing myself when I couldn't afford to take it to a mechanic and I've always wanted to do this."
Marshall then connected with Jesse Maple through the Pocatello Car Club Facebook page, and the two of them joined together to open the U-Turn Garage that is located on 1110 Yellowstone Ave, Suite C.
Like Marshall, Maple has a big affection for vehicles.
"I've owned over probably 250, 300 cars myself," Maple said. "I typically have two or three vehicles at any given time, and it's definitely something I've been passionate about my entire life."
What makes the U-Turn Garage different? It allows you to be the mechanic on your own car.
"We have the lift and the tools and everything," Marshall said "You come here, we get you on. You work on your own car. Not only can we get you in sooner than a lot of the auto shops right now, but we can do it cheaper, because you're doing all the labor yourself."
The garage also has a TV mounted on the wall to show YouTube demonstrations on what you need to fix.
Both Marshall and Maple say they will help guide you through the process.
"I'm not going to walk somebody step-by-step through a transmission change," Maple said. "But if they want to come in and learn how to do their oil changes, maybe some front-end work, I'm more than comfortable trying to show them what they need to do and what tools they're going to need."
The U-Turn Garage is charging $40 per hour with the lift or $30 without the lift. Veterans and first responders get 15% off.
Marshall says they hope to have classes in the near future to help teach local drivers the basics.
"There's always room to learn more, and if you have the time and the drive to do it, we're here to help you learn about your car and fix it yourself that way, when you're stuck on the side of the road, you know what to look for," Marshall said.
