Jerome County Sheriff’s Office investigate officer-involved shooting of man near Heyburn

HEYBURN, Idaho - A man is dead after an Idaho State Police trooper opened fire during a traffic stop Monday afternoon near Heyburn.

The shooting happened in the 700 block of West 400 South in Minidoka County.

According to investigators, an ISP trooper stopped a Chevrolet Silverado and requested additional law enforcement units during the traffic stop. Shortly afterward, the trooper reported that shots had been fired.

The 31-year-old male driver was struck by gunfire. The trooper and responding officers attempted to provide emergency medical aid, but the man died from his injuries.

The trooper was not injured.

The trooper has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

The Jerome County Sheriff’s Office is leading the Critical Incident Task Force investigation. The task force is made up of investigators and professional staff from local law enforcement agencies who assist with investigations involving police use of force.

The Minidoka County Coroner’s Office will take custody of the man’s body and determine the cause and manner of death. His identity will be released after his family has been notified.
