Wildlife Crossing Project in the works for Teton County
TETON COUNTY, Wyo. (KIFI) - Teton County is working on trying to create overpasses and underpasses for animals to cross the road without causing a disturbance to traffic. The project would be five to seven miles long with fencing between each overpass or underpass.
The county is working on limiting car crashes that between animals and vehicles. There were more than 200 collisions with animals in 2023 within Teton County alone. Most of them killed the wildlife while a few of them even killed the people too.
There are three locations for which Teton County is trying to put this project in place. The first is on the Teton Pass just to the east side of the Wyoming and Idaho border. The second is on US Highway 89 just to the north side of the town of Jackson. The third is on US Highway 189 near Camp Creek just to the east side of the Hoback Junction. These are the areas that were determined that collisions happen the most with animals within the county.
The preliminary ideas are still in the works and they are currently working on getting the funding needed possible for each of the projects. The earliest they could even start the construction is in 2026.
