Man dies in Ammon shooting

An Ada County man is dead after a shooting occurred in Ammon on Sunday afternoon.

Sgt. Jeff Edwards of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when bondsmen out of Boise were searching for Philip Clay. They were trying to serve him with a felony warrant in the 3500 block of Greenfield Drive in Ammon.

Deputies say when the bondsmen found Clay in the parking lot, he had a gun and was shot by one of the bondsmen.

Clay was taken to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center where he died from his gunshot wounds.

Greg Hawkes, who lives nearby, witnessed the incident.

“We were home getting lunch ready and we heard some gunshots,” said Hawkes. “On Sunday afternoons, Ammon is really quiet. We didn’t know what was going on. We heard some yelling, so we came outside, and that’s when we saw police officers.”

Hawkes said he and his family are nervous about the situation, but still feel their neighborhood is safe. Edwards said the public isn’t at risk.

“Bad things happen every once in a while, and we live in a great community, and we’ll get this picked up and figured out,” said Edwards

Clay had a felony warrant for possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver. The warrant was issued Sept. 18 , 2014, with a bond of $100,000.

Bonneville County deputies are interviewing neighbors and witnesses. They are expected to release further information Monday.
