World AIDS Day, a day for worldwide unity in the fight against HIV

World AIDS Day is held on Dec. 1 each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died.

In Eastern Idaho, the nonprofit Breaking Boundaries is hosting events throughout the week. Including a sold-out black-tie dinner on Friday night. The events support and remember those locally who deal with HIV/AIDS.

Starting Monday, Dec. 7 Eastern Idaho Public Health will offer free HIV testing.

It says World AIDS Day and the month of December is a great opportunity to educate people about HIV/AIDS and debunk some of the common misconceptions with the viruses.

“Maybe some of the misconceptions are that it only affects people that are injection drug users or man who have sex with men. In reality it actually affects heterosexuals, it affects women, it affects teens so it’s really important we get tested at least once in our lifetime,” said Nikki Sayer, R.N, Eastern Idaho Public Health.

The free tests will be Monday, Dec. 7 to Friday, Dec. 11. You will have to schedule an appointment. You can find information on how to do that here.
