Human relations speaker talks civil rights with democrats
Chair of Pocatello’s Human Relations Advisory Committee, Jamar Brown spoke today at the Democratic Headquarters. She says the democrats here in Pocatello see that civil and human rights are an issue. Brown would like to work with the democrats to come with solutions in town.
As a part of the committee, Brown would like to tackle the prevention and elimination of discrimination by promoting harmony in peaceful relationships. She says would like them to ensure all people are regarded and treated with dignity and respect.
According to Brown, an example is the foreign exchange students that come to ISU. She says some of them have been discriminated against and even had letters left on their windshields of their car.
Brown speaks at several events in hope that people become more educated on cultural difference. And also, would like to find a way for these students to become educated on the new culture they find here in the U.S.
She will be speaking next at the Iwanazawa room inside City Hall in Pocatello on Monday. She says all are welcome.
“We do have a growing student international base. I see that continually growing. I think there are some cultural differences we need to be made aware of and they need to be made aware of as well. So that we can cohabit here in the community. We do have a lot of racial issues still. I don’t think a lot of people here in 2015 understand.”
