Local 8 year old holds champion position in bronc riding
The toughest sport on dirt isn’t just for high school or college athletes, even the young ones get involved.
That’s the case for the 2016 Winter Series Champion, he’s about 75 pounds, 4 feet 4 inches, and he’s 8 years old.
From the smallest pair of cowboy boots,to the ones he wears now, being a cowboy is a lifestyle for Kash Lish.
“Coming out of the chutes and going way out there,” said Lish. “The way it makes me cock in there and get ready when my Grampy says, ‘Go get em’.”
It all started after one wild ride while bringing in the cows, when his family realized Kash doesn’t come off a horse easily.
“I knew he could ride, but I didn’t know he could ride that good,” said Teresa Lish, Kash’s mother.
So a coach was found, and the best one for the job was grandpa.
“You know it’s like a family affair,” said Teresa Lish. “My dad is in the shoot with him. My husband is sitting on the shoot, he’s filming. The rest of us are in the stands cheering him on.”
The champ began riding in January. Only 5 months in and he’s earned a buckle, but it didn’t come without some spills.
“These teeth went through this lip,” said Kash. “The thing that scares me is when she flips.”
Like a true cowboy, he dusts himself off, waves to the crowd and rides again.
Kash’s big goal is to make it to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Right now he stands in 8th place for earnings for both adults and kids.
He’ll be at the Rexburg Rodeo July 1 and 2.
