Oldest theater in Idaho still going strong

The Virginia Theater in Shelley is marking ten years with the current owners with a production of “Pirates of Penzance.” Ronnie and Devon Kerbs say that at more than 100 years old, theirs is the oldest operating theater in Idaho. They have a special connection to the building.

“My great-great grandfather is John Shelley,” Ronnie said. “He’s actually the founder of Shelley and he backed the theater and his son and son-in-law built it, so it’s kind of fun that some of my family members used to own it.”

The Virginia draws some of the most experienced talent in Eastern Idaho. Shari Couilliard, who plays the role of Ruth, has recently worked behind the scenes with a number of theatrical and musical productions in the area, but decided to step into the spotlight again.

“I was just itching to be on stage again, so I auditioned and I became Ruth and I just love it,” Couilliard said.

“Pirates of Penzance” will be presented July 15, 16 and 18 at 7:30 pm and the Virginia Theater, with a 2pm matinee performance on Saturday.
