Rescue teams gear up for winter in backcountry

Search and rescue workers in Teton County are gearing up for what is expected to be a busy season this year when snow starts to fall following a flurry of calls for help last year. Search and Rescue chief adviser Tim Ciocarlan says it’s the hardest time of year for rescuing people because of short days and cold nights. Volunteers respond year-round, day and night, to help anyone who needs to be rescued in the backcountry, which covers more than 4,200 square miles. The Jackson Hole News and Guide reports volunteers train all year for all types of rescues, including swift water rescues, avalanche, plane crashes, backcountry skiing, snowmobile incidents and cave rescues.
