Wildlife officials considering new rules on antler gathering

Utah wildlife officials say they will not renew a controversial ban on winter-time antler gathering.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the ban was imposed last year after the Division of Wildlife Resources became concerned over the impact antler hunters could have on wintering mule deer, elk and moose.

Officials said Thursday they would look into smaller, more targeted closures instead of blanket bans to serve the needs of big game and also support the popular recreational activity.

The state launched an antler gathering course in 2012. More than 19,000 people in Utah are certified.

Neighboring states such as Nevada and Idaho do not have regulations on antler gathering.
