Local business with national recognition
A nationally recognized local company got a special visit from the governor today. Kate’s Real Food is an energy bar company based in Victor, Idaho.
The bars have been featured in Forbes, Outside Magazine, and Adventure Sports Network. But the company comes from humble beginnings right here in Idaho, and the inspiration: skiing.
“I would work at night and ski during the day and that’s pretty much how I got started. I started pulling items from my cupboard and mixing things up. Even if you were waiting for the tram later in the day, sometimes the wait was long and it was the perfect spot to be able to eat,” says Kate Schade, founder.
After a while, Schade began passing the bars out to friends who liked them. Then she started charging for them and eventually developed it into a business.
“It feels really good to be a part of the team but I’m pretty aware that that recognition quite honestly isn’t about me. It’s about the people who were here way before me,” says Todd Hanna, who was named CEO of the company a year ago.
“Like a lot of small companies get started I made them out of my house then I started making them out of a restaurant in Jackson that I worked at, at night when everyone was gone. It feels pretty incredible, sometimes I think ‘Holy cow, I have an energy bar business’ of all things,” says Schade.
The company just rebranded their look, but they say that’s the only thing that’s changed.
