Controversies emerge surrounding Pocatello High School
New controversies emerged surrounding the renovation proposals for Pocatello High School.
A group has come together to oppose the renovations. The group claims the design will take away the high school’s iconic design.
Organizer, Steven McCurdy received more than 1500 signatures on change.org along with 353 likes on a Facebook page named “Save Pocatello High School.” Many people have commented in the group saying that the Hummel Design doesn’t reflect Old Town’s character, and it would compromise the integrity of Old Town.
McCurdy says, “The architecture was almost like a modernist appendage that really detracted and took away from the historical nature. Ya know, it was considered the grandest of structures in Pocatello. So, whatever addition that is added needs to be complimentary, not overpowering.”
The school board still needs to get final approval from the Historic Preservation Commission
Before any construction can take place, they have yet to see the final design. The opposition will go before the school board next Tuesday where they will present their concerns.
