Idaho Gold Star Families Memorial Monument coming to Pocatello
Plans are in place for an Idaho Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Pocatello.
The monument is being facilitated by a local committee headed by Pocatello resident Rebecca Webb, a Gold Star Mother who lost her son in service to the country.
It is part of a national effort to erect monuments honoring fallen service members and their families under the direction of the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.
The monument will sit in a plaza embedded with gold stars representing every county in Idaho, and feathers representing every federally recognized Native American tribe in the state.
Flags will fly for the United States, the State of Idaho, every branch of military service and the POW-MIA organization, as well as Gold Star and “Honor and Remember” flags.
“This will be a place recognizing and honoring the fallen, and the sacrifice borne by the families of the fallen across the state,” said Webb. “This is a monument for all of Idaho.”
The land for the monument is being donated by Portneuf Development LLC, one of the developers behind the new Northgate District, a mixed residential and commercial community being built on the north end of Pocatello.
The monument will cost approximately $250,000 to complete, an amount being raised entirely through donations and grants solicited by the committee.
Completion of the memorial is anticipated for fall 2019.
