Man bikes across country with dog

Taking your K-9 best friend for a bike ride is a common thing, taking him on a ride across the country over the course of six months is not. This helps team Onyx a non-profit who made their way through Idaho Thursday, catch attention and spread awareness for their cause.

“Ron and I are currently traveling cross country, Ron is Bicycling and towing his 85- pound black lab Onyx and we’re calling it Onyx’s great adventure,” said Megan Shriner.

An adventure that is set to last six months as Meghan Shreiner and Ron Storms along with their two furry friends Onyx and Fenix, travel from Lincoln City, Oregon to Cochranville, Pennsylvania- home of Canine Partners for Life, an organization that provides service and companion dogs for those in need.

“Ron was raised with his handicapped aunt, she was mentally handicapped and she also suffered from seizures, so she could have benefitted from having a service dog.”

Knowing the kind of positive impact a companion or service dog could have on a person’s life, motivates Ron to keep pedaling in hopes of meeting their goal of raising thirty thousand dollars, which is the cost of one service dog.

“I’m a dog lover and an animal lover, so it’s the perfect thing for me to do, so that’s why I’m doing it,” said Ron.

This kind of passion helped Ron and Onyx peddle their way through Idaho, the duo’s biggest challenge yet.

“We had sleet in Idaho and it was about the size of peas or corn kernels blasting me in the face, so that was probably the toughest.”

However, when conditions get too bad, Onyx hops in the truck with Meghan and a dog statue appropriately named takes his place with Ron.

“Meghan named him, it’s the fake Onyx she named him Fonyx.”

As team Onyx continues peddling their way across the country, sleeping in their 96-foot trailer, they hope that when their adventure ends, a person in need will be able to begin their own adventure with a new service dog provided by the proceeds of Onyx’s Great Adventure.

Meghan and Ron both saved for three years in order to fund Onyx’s Great Adventure and will donate one hundred percent of the proceeds to Canine Partners for Life. All they ask is that you share their story with others and donate if you are able to.
