Drowsy Chaperone hits the stage
Over the top production numbers, soaring songs and every cliche, gag, and gimmick from the golden age of musicals.
Combine that with a theater production that is not afraid to laugh at it’s self and you have the Drowsy Chaperone.
“I think what makes it so special is that there are a lot of things you don’t expect.” said John Bidwell, who is the Palace Playhouse owner and long time actor and director.
It starts with a narrator who steps outside of the world of theater to talk to the audience as one of them discribing what he remembers and what he envisions the show could possibly be.
John Bidwell plays the lead character of man in the chair….Which he lovingly changed to old man in the chair.
“The knees creak and groan a little bit now and I don’t get around like I used to and so I am looking for something that perhaps I you know the old man may fit.” He said.
“The character that I play is called the man in the chair, the but we just added the old so I can get away with murder. ” Said Bidwell.
John says he loves the way the man in the chair gets to interact with the audience but that’s just part of what makes the Drowsy Chaperone so much fun.
“It’s a wonderful mix because there’s so many funny moments and funny funny characters. One character is Aldolfo, you know he considers himself a great woman’s man.” Said Bidwell.
“And it’s there to have fun, it doesn’t take it’s self too seriously, it’s there to just make you smile and belly laugh if you will. It’s a lot of fun.” He said.
So if you’re looking for a chance to get away and just laugh for a little while, consider the Drowsy Chaperone.
