Pocatello considers joining class-action lawsuit

The Pocatello City Council is expected to decide Thursday night whether to join a national class-action lawsuit against several pharmaceutical companies.

The agreement is with the Chicago based law firm of Keller Lenkner, LLC, Consovoy McCarthy Park, PLLC, and Mooney Wieland PLLC.

The targeted companies include Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, and other drug companies involved in the marketing, sale, and distribution of opioids.

According to Keller-Lenkner, the companies encouraged the use of opioids despite being aware of the high risks of abuse. They allege the drugs ultimately caused economic harm to the city.

The agreement is based on a contingency fee, so there would be no direct cost to the city, but the lawyers would get a sizable share of any settlement.
